Proceeds from the sale of Hangar 2 to Larimer Associates and Hartman Ely Investments will provide funding to continue important upgrades to WINGS, a 70-year-old facility. In addition to the “Gateway to Flight” entrance complex under construction with grants from the Gates Frontier Fund and Family Foundation, planned improvements include interior mezzanines around the museum perimeter, weatherization/energy upgrades, renovations to the museum’s western addition, visitor amenities, and multiple gallery improvements.
The Museum’s “Gateway to Flight” entrance complex is scheduled for completion in late December. Other improvements will be scheduled to follow in 2011. The entrance complex is highlighted by a three story observation tower which will provide views of Lowry, Denver and the Front Range. Additional features include a new Welcome Theater (already completed) for Wings’ new film starring Harrison Ford; interior and exterior observation decks; a new museum store and admissions area; a refreshment center and access to future mezzanine spaces. Outside, a Veterans Plaza is planned beneath the Museum’s elevated B-52 Stratofortress, appearing in takeoff position above a landscaped runway. The “Gateway to Flight” will also honor Colorado’s Charlie Gates as a business pioneer and aviation legend.
“The B-52 and Gateway to Flight are symbolic of Wings’ flight into a future full of promise for all of Colorado,” said Greg Anderson, chief executive officer for WINGS. “The Hangar 2 redevelopment and Gates’ family support will fuel our expanding mission of education and inspiration through flight.”
